Summer ’17 Open Studios and Reading

The Lighthouse Works is pleased to announce that Open Studios for our Summer 2017 fellows Julia Bland, Andrew Meriwether Francis, Terry Hempfling and Mark Labowskie will be held on Saturday, August 12th.

Julia Bland’s *works incorporate painting and weaving, developing the structures and patterns that bind disparate elements into a whole. Through weaving, cutting, sewing, dying, and painting, the surface becomes a visible record of her evolving, multi-faceted process. Bland earned her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2008, and her MFA from Yale in 2012. She has been an artist in residence at The Sharpe-Walentas Space Program, Yaddo, The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, and The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She has been awarded The Milton and Sally Avery Fellowship from Yaddo, The Carol Scholsberg Memorial Prize, The Jacques and Natasha Gelman Trust Travel Fellowship, and the Florence Leif Award. She has exhibited with On Stellar Rays, The NYU Institute of Fine Arts, and Asya Geisberg Gallery in NYC, Vox Populi in Philadelphia, and CES Gallery in Los Angeles. Her second solo exhibition in NYC will open Fall 2017 at Miller Contemporary.

  • Andrew Meriwether Francis (b. 1984) is an artist from Houston, TX who lives and works in New York, New York. He received a B.F.A. from the Cooper Union in 2009, as well as an M.F.A. in Sculpture+Extended Media from the Virginia Commonwealth University in 2015. Andrew is currently in a state of emergence.

Terry Hempfling *is a movement-based interdisciplinary artist living in Brooklyn, NY. Her work has been presented in New York at The Bell House, Fourth Arts Block, The Old Stone House, The Last Brucennial, T.B.A., The Living Theatre, Goodbye Blue Monday, Celebrate Brooklyn!, Dixon Place, A.U.N.T.S., and the Arts in Bushwick Site Festival; in Philadelphia at The Barbary, in Baltimore at Charm City Kitty Club, in San Francisco at ODC Theater, in St. Anthony, MN at Silverwood Gallery, and in Yellow Springs, OH at Antioch College. Terry has worked on projects with artists including Marina Abramovic, Rachel Jendrzejewski, Phoebe Berglund, Amanda Friedman, Jill Becker and Pavel Zustiak (among others). She was an Artist in Residence at the Shandaken Project (Vail’s Gate, NY, 2012), a Director’s Choice recipient at Spoke the Hub (Brooklyn, NY, 2014), a guest artist at Antioch College (Yellow Springs, OH, 2016), and is a Mellon Subsidized Artist at Triskelion Arts (Brooklyn, NY, 2012-2016). Terry studied aerial acrobatics at the San Francisco Circus Center and holds a BFA in Theater and Dance from Antioch College.

  • *Mark Labowskie is a Jones Lecturer in Fiction at Stanford University, where he was recently a Wallace Stegner Fellow. His stories have appeared in Subtropics, Gulf Coast, and Sou’wester, and his work has been supported by the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, the Millay Colony, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.
  • The studios at Lighthouse Works will be open from 11 to 1pm, with a reading at noon. Come see the work that was created by our fellows during their six weeks in residence and help us celebrate another successful session!
