Fall II Artist Talks

Lighthouse Works is pleased to welcome D. Allen, Jared Buckheister, Leah Guadagnoli, Kate Moses and Zach Trow to Fishers Island. Our Fall II '17 Fellows were selected by independent panels from a pool of over 800 applicants and will be in residence from October 24, 2017 until December 5, 2017. While our fellows' primary obligation is to the solitary pursuit of their creative work, we do ask every artist to participate in some public events. These events are great opportunities for our community to meet our fellows, see and hear about their work, and learn about their time on Fishers Island. All are welcome; you don't need to know anything about art or writing to attend and enjoy!

D. Allen

D. Allen is a queer poet and multidisciplinary artist living in Minneapolis, MN. They are a recent graduate of the University of Minnesota's Creative Writing MFA program, a recipient of the 2017 Minnesota Emerging Writers' Grant from The Loft Literary Center, and a 2017 Lighthouse Works Fellow. D.'s work has recently appeared in District Lit, Connotation Press, Black Warrior Review, and elsewhere. Their current manuscript examines the inner life of a queer, disabled, genderqueer body through the lens of grief and intimacy.

Jared Buckheister

Jared Buckhiester is an artist living and working in New York City. He has a BFA in photography from Pratt and an MFA in Sculpture from Bard College. He makes everything but painting, combining biographical psychosexual material with larger social and political narratives that often point toward a culminating violence. Buckhiester has had exhibitions at Envoy Enterprises; Feature Inc.; Gallerie Du Jour, Paris; Thomas Rehbein, Cologne; and at The Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in Lille France. Jared has been the recipient of awards from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, The Albert K Murray Foundation, and The Dedalus Foundation for the Arts.

Leah Guadagnoli

Leah Guadagnoli lives and works in Brooklyn. She received her MFA in Visual Art from Rutgers University in 2014. She has had solo exhibitions at 247365 in New York and at Sadie Halie Projects in Minneapolis. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at White Columns, Harper's Books, Asya Geisberg, Cuevas Tillard, Hero Beach Club, and Library Street Collective, among others. In 2016 Guadagnoli was a recipient of the Vermont Studio Center's full Fellowship Award and attended Yaddo in 2015. She is the founder of the Maple Terrace Artist Residency Program. Her work has been reviewed in New American Paintings, Art F City, Maake Magazine, The Brvtalist, Little Star Weekly, and by Maria Brito.

Kate Moses

Kate Moses is the author of Wintering: A Novel of Sylvia Plath, published in sixteen languages and recipient of the Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize and a Prix des Lectrices de Elle, and Cakewalk, A Memoir, as well as the co-editor of two award-winning anthologies of essays on motherhood, Mothers Who Think and Because I Said So, the offspring of Salon's Mothers Who Think, of which she was a founding editor during the internet's infancy. The Fayum Portraits, a novel inspired by a 2000-year-old memorial painting, and Honeymoon in Pompeii, a collection of short stories, are in progress. She has received a Lannan Literary Fellowship, an American Book Award, a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection, and residencies from the Djerassi Foundation, the MacDowell Colony, and Karuna. A native San Franciscan and longtime teacher and editor, Kate now lives in Essex, New York and works with writers privately through Birds & Muses.

Zach Trow

Zach is the currently based in Los Angles California. He completed Coast Time in the summer of 2016 along the Oregon Coast. During the academic year of 2015/2016, he was awarded the Fountainhead Teaching Fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University in Sculpture. He earned dual degrees in Japanese and Sculpture at the University of Oregon, and his MFA in Sculpture at Hunter College in 2014. In 2013, he completed a study abroad program at The University der Künste Berlin, Germany and mounted a two-person Exhibition at Greusslich Contemporary. In 2014, Zach was awarded a full scholarship to SOMA Summer Mexico City and exhibited at Bikini Wax during his stay in Mexico. His solo exhibitions include Reynolds Gallery in Richmond Virginia, Doppler Gallery in Portland, OR and has participated in exhibitions in Philadelphia, and New York.
